Jay L shares five of his favourite tracks with us ahead of his set at Varkala Festival in just over a weeks time (12th-15th August). Amid some seriously good releases on the vinyl-only brstl imprint, Jay is first and foremost a DJ of the highest order. Imagine our excitement then, to take a peek into his bag.
Varkala debuts this year with a discerning yet low-key line-up and a modest capacity of 500, promising an intimate affair inspired by the tradition of artistic expression in India. Look out for Mr Ties, Brian Not Brian, Daniel Wang and Mavrik favourites Red Greg and Harri Pepper.
Twilight – You’re In Love
The genius of Lawrence Ross. This solid boogie floater is from Ross’s second (and last) album – 1986’s ‘Pains Of Love’. His first album – ‘Still Loving You – is just a stone. cold. classic. and if you don’t know it, do yourself a favour and get some Twilight in your life. Ubiquity reissued both back in 2010 so they won’t break the bank.
YTA Jourias – Adome Nyueto
Killer, killer afro disco bomb that I managed to track down after a long time searching. Goes off everytime & perfect for dancing in the sunshine.
Loosefingers – Lamentation
I was in the park the other day and overheard some kids sitting around listening to music off their phone. “… Yeah it’s a Larry Heard remix of Disclosure. I don’t know who the fuck Larry is but…”
They looked a bit confused when I held my fist in the air and shouted over “Larry’s the man.”
At least they’re on the right track.
Recently got reminded how good this track is when Darshan Jesrani dropped it on the beach at Love International in Croatia. Proper hot summer’s night eyes down moment.
Eric Martin – Fire Alarm
Eric Martin in raw ’93 mode. The first of the Traxmen releases on Dance Mania. Late night sweaty jacks. It’s a dope 12″ – Sump Pump and Acid Em are both weapons as well.
Rob – Make It Fast, Make It Slow
Sometimes I need it fast. Sometimes I need it slow.
